What is the phenomenon that is black hair?

Personally It was difficult growing up with natural hair. I’ve never had a perm, relaxer, texturizer or whatever you wanna call it. But growing up I wanted one, because it just seemed easier to fit in that way. My mom was a firm believer in keeping hair natural and my dad was always saying how people pay for the kind of hair I have. And I still wanted a perm. I always...

update!
kelisha again.
i was really eager to read the responses and here’s what i have so far:
shegenius, toniwednesday, and smalldraws all had very positive things to say about the “wild growth” hair oil that i spoke of in the last post. they all agreed on it’s benefits with a couple of exceptions (the smell primarily) and i think that i will just have to suck it up and use it...

White People & Black People Hair
kissingstars:
the405:
There has been far too little research done in the area of what drives white people to touch black hair. What are the origins of the strange compulsion that forces them to reach out to smooth, squeeze, pet, pat, bounce their fingers in the soft, resilient exuberance of an Afro, a natural, a just-doin’-its-own-thing jumble of black hair? It’s only hair - but try telling...

hair snob?
i think i’ve become a hair snob kinda. i take hours just looking at ingredients in the hair section of stores. i was at target and actually read and compared ingredients, i took a box of relaxer and compared it to the ingredients in draino, and also nair’s ingredients.. whoa what a revelation. alot of companies relabel and put new prices on things when they have the same exact...
Retraction
i MIGHT have yo do a retraction on the product suggestion for L’Oreal Everpure Shampoos & Conditioners… i recently went to target and looked at the ingredients and they are riddled with tons of chemicals. not sulfates but it contains sulfoacetate, which sounds like a sulfur derivative.. -___-
i cannot properly assess it, since i havent tried it, but soon i will and post a review!

My bf sent me this on FB. A girl who has natural hair uses it. Any comments on the ingredients?:
Hey! This is a recipe that I came up with that I think is a pretty good conditioner if you do not want to put harsh chemicals in your hair. This can also be good for those who have just gone natural. I can send you guys some during the summer if you do not have the patience to make...
"I like your hair"
napturality:
Today, I stepped out on the porch just when this little girl was walking by. Apparently she was walking home from school since she had her school uniform on with a hot pink book bag slung over her shoulder. Her natural hair was in a poofy ponytail sitting on top of her head, she couldn’t be older than nine.
I told her “I like you hair!”
she said “Thank you!” and kept walking.
I...

fearisacceptanceofrejection:
When I was young, I always wanted long straight hair. My mother was a pretty busy woman, so my hair was natural but always in braids. I never had my natural hair out, and for some reason became very self conscious because of it. When I turned 12 my mother gave me permission to put perm in my hair.
I loved it. My hair was short, but shiny and bouncy. I especially...
fables
I’ve never been one to spend more than 30 mins on myself as far as excess grooming (this includes makeup, hair, EXTRA stuff) and i neglected my relaxed hair.
before this, i was relaxed for about two years, and before that, i was natural my whole life. when i went off to college i wanted manageability, which for some reason everyone concluded that relaxed hair was the solution. so for my...
And she lived nappily ever after
“Does it itch?”
No dumbass. Instead of replying I silently shook my head no, confused as to why people assumed that my scalp must be itchy just because my hair is natural.
“It sure looks like it does….”
And the comments just keep rolling… You’d think she’d take a hint by now to stop talking.
“It looks dry. Why did you cut your hair off in the first place? Were you going through some angry...

Mineral Oil, (THE BATTLE)
Products marketed for Black women usually contain petroleum and mineral oil, for two reasons: it makes our hair have an artificial shine and these are cheap products to make and sell. Petroleum and mineral oil clog the pores on your scalp and coat the strand, making hair much more prone to damage and breakage in the long run. If you are using an expensive product and one of these items are near...
