fables

I’ve never been one to spend more than 30 mins on myself as far as excess grooming (this includes makeup, hair, EXTRA stuff)  and i neglected my relaxed hair.

before this, i was relaxed for about two years, and before that, i was natural my whole life. when i went off to college i wanted manageability, which for some reason everyone concluded that relaxed hair was the solution. so for my 18th birthday, senior year, i chopped off all my hair, relaxed it and had a halle-esque do.

one night, i researched how to transition to natural hair. i was tired of my boring relaxed hair. i had planned to transition for about a year? then i would chop it off. when i told everyone (excluding my mother) they had the worst stories regarding natural hair. as though it was the worst thing ever. how it was ‘nappy’, and just hard to manage and never grew. now, i must let you know these girls who were telling me this had their manes, dyed fried, and laid to the side; ear length hair. yeah. i drew my conclusion there. plus my mother never had problems with our hair, when we were younger, its kinda the same hair!

so i dont know how long i transitioned, maybe about 4 months and then i did it. i remember it. it was at 3am, i filled my hair with shampoo so that i could differentiate the textures. at first i just wanted to trim my hair, but i ended up cutting a lot if it off, so i said ‘dude, just do it!’ and i did it. it was rough, but i was free! the next day i had my then boyfriend’s friend trim it, which resulted in a buzz cut a la amber rose. it was the best ever, in my eyes, but others did not have the same view.

i think a lot of people value length over health, when in actuality when you have health, length comes, fast.

so here i am, one year ‘newly natural’ and loving every bit of it. i admonish everyone to try it, its the best experience.

and unlike before i spend a lot of time on my hair, deep conditioning, protein treatments, other treatment, the time it takes to carefully choose products, reading the ingredients, researching, etc. it has all paid off.

embrace your natural hair, its beautiful, its gorgeous and its totally fitting for you, God would not match you with hair that does not bring out your features, or hair that does not speak volumes or contribute to you in any way.

they speak fables, the ones who say otherwise. fables are short allegorical narratives making a moral points, but these fables are based on what society thinks are moral, moral hair, isnt natural, and i know that for a fact.
